The TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Foundation qualification is earned by passing the OGEA-101 Part 1 exam: 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, closed book, pass mark 60% (24 of 40), no prerequisites, based on the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition. The official exam plan puts 24 of the 40 questions in the three ADM-related areas, so anchor your preparation there and use The Open Group's own Foundation Study Guide and Practice Test as your primary materials.

What this credential covers and which version applies

TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Foundation validates basic knowledge and understanding of Enterprise Architecture using the TOGAF approach, tested by the OGEA-101 Part 1 exam based on the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition.

The Open Group describes this certification as validating that an individual has the basic knowledge and understanding of Enterprise Architecture using the TOGAF approach, sufficient to contribute to an architecture project or work with its results. It is one of the certifications in the TOGAF certification portfolio, alongside TOGAF 9 and TOGAF Business Architecture.

The qualification is based on the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition. There is no "TOGAF 10 Foundation": The Open Group deliberately decoupled certification names from the standard's edition, so certifications are defined by their own Bodies of Knowledge rather than by a version label. TOGAF 9 Foundation, based on Version 9.2, is a separate credential with a separate exam.

Foundation sits at Levels 1 and 2 of Bloom's taxonomy — remembering and understanding. You need precise knowledge of terms, structure and concepts, but not the applied scenario analysis that the Practitioner level tests.

A study plan built on the official materials

Work through the official Foundation Study Guide aligned to the 10th Edition, then validate with the official Practice Test — and treat third-party 9.2 materials as background only.

The Open Group publishes a Foundation Study Guide (item B230) written specifically for this qualification. It is aligned to the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition, covers every Level 1 learning outcome, and includes Key Learning Points, Test Yourself questions for each syllabus part, and a full Test Yourself paper. If you prefer structured self-study, The Open Group also sells 60-day online self-study materials for the Foundation syllabus, with no prerequisites to self-study.

For question practice, the official Part 1 Practice Test is described as representative of the exam's content and includes the question formats found in the actual examination. The publisher is explicit that performance on the practice test does not guarantee similar performance on the real exam, so treat a strong practice score as one signal, not a prediction.

  • Primary reading: the official TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Foundation Study Guide, aligned to the 10th Edition
  • Question practice: the official Part 1 Practice Test, used to rehearse formats rather than predict scores
  • Optional structure: accredited training courses, listed in The Open Group's register — The Open Group recommends training but states that taking a course does not guarantee a pass
  • Booking: exams are scheduled through Pearson VUE, at test centers or remotely via OnVUE

Practical booking details

Book through Pearson VUE for a test center or OnVUE. Check the issuer’s ESL eligibility rules before booking if you need additional time for an English-language exam.

For the single-part OGEA-101 exam, the 30-minute ESL allowance is added automatically after registration when you reside in and take the English exam in a designated ESL country. Eligible candidates living elsewhere must request and obtain approval before booking. The official ESL document explains the country, language-proficiency and documentation conditions.

One figure to verify yourself: the exact exam fee was not confirmed in the sources reviewed for this guide. The Open Group publishes current prices on its certification exam fees page, and accredited training courses typically include the exam voucher in the course fee. Check both before you budget.

The exam is closed book. A qualifying translation dictionary is a separate exception for approved ESL or medical accommodations at test centers, subject to inspection and the issuer’s restrictions; translation dictionaries are not permitted for OnVUE.

Where Foundation takes you next

Foundation is the first step of the Enterprise Architecture learning path: with it, you qualify to sit the Part 2 exam (OGEA-102) for the Practitioner certification.

Passing Part 1 earns Foundation certification and partial credit toward Practitioner. You can continue through the Part 2 exam (OGEA-102). The Combined Part 1 and Part 2 route (OGEA-103) requires passing both sections; a separate Bridge route (OGEA-10B) is available to TOGAF 9 Certified holders. Check the official pathway requirements before choosing an exam.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers to help you apply the guidance for TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Foundation.

Can I use TOGAF 9.2 study materials to prepare for OGEA-101?
Partly. The universal concepts and the ADM from Version 9.2 carried forward into the Fundamental Content of the 10th Edition, so 9.2 notes overlap with the new material. But OGEA-101's Body of Knowledge is defined from the 10th Edition, so 9.2 materials cannot be assumed complete for the Level 1 learning outcomes. Use a 10th Edition-aligned resource as your primary reference.
Do I need prior Enterprise Architecture experience or any prerequisite certification?
The exam itself has no prerequisites, and The Open Group's study materials note that prior knowledge of Enterprise Architecture is advantageous but not required. This is one reason the credential works as a starting point for the learning path.
Is this the same qualification as TOGAF 9 Foundation?
No. TOGAF 9 Foundation is based on the TOGAF Standard, Version 9.2, while this Foundation qualification belongs to the learning path based on the 10th Edition. The Open Group supports movement between the paths, including a bridge route for TOGAF 9 Certified holders, but the credentials are distinct.
