TOGAF 9 Certified holders can take the Enterprise Architecture Bridge exam (OGEA-10B) to earn TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner. It has 14 questions in 60 minutes, with a pass mark of 18 out of 30 points. TOGAF 9 Foundation alone does not meet the Bridge prerequisite. Agile, Digital, EA Leader, sustainable systems and risk/security credentials offer separate, focused learning paths.

Who can use the Bridge route

The bridge is a single exam, OGEA-10B, that takes TOGAF 9 Certified holders to TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner; the specialist credentials are separate awards.

The prerequisite matters: you must already hold the TOGAF 9 Certified qualification. TOGAF 9 Certified is the level 2 award, which tests analysis and application beyond the Foundation level. TOGAF 9 Foundation by itself does not unlock the bridge.

The Bridge recognises existing TOGAF 9 Certified knowledge. It provides a route to Practitioner without repeating the full Enterprise Architecture Foundation and Practitioner path.

Bridge exam format and scoring

Fourteen questions in 60 minutes: ten simple multiple choice worth 1 point each, then four scenario questions scored on a 5/3/1/0 gradient, for a 30-point maximum and an 18-point pass mark.

Section 1 covers the Bridge Level 1 learning outcomes with ten simple multiple-choice questions in 20 minutes. Each correct answer scores one point. Once you complete Section 1, you cannot return to it.

Section 2 covers the Bridge Level 2 learning outcomes with four complex scenario questions in 40 minutes, using gradient scoring: the best answer earns 5 points, the second best 3, the third 1, and the distracter 0. This is the only open-book part. An electronic copy of the TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Body of Knowledge is built into the exam and becomes available for Section 2 only; no hardcopy books are allowed at test centers.

The exam is supervised and delivered at Pearson VUE test centers or remotely through Pearson VUE OnVUE, and it is offered in English. Everything so far concerns OGEA-10B specifically — do not attach this pass mark or timing to other TOGAF exams in the portfolio.

Worked example: checking a bridge score

Seven correct Section 1 answers plus scenario scores of 5, 3, 3, and 0 give exactly 18 of 30 points — a pass at the threshold.

This original arithmetic example uses supplied scores to show why the result is calculated out of 30 points.

Practice exercise

In the TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Bridge exam, Section 1 has 10 simple multiple-choice questions worth 1 point each. Section 2 has 4 scenario questions scored 5 for the best answer, 3 for the second best, 1 for the third best, and 0 for the distracter. The maximum score is 30 points and the pass mark is 18 of 30 (60%). Suppose you answer 7 of the 10 Section 1 questions correctly, and your four Section 2 answers earn 5, 3, 3, and 0 points respectively. Do you pass?

Show answer

Yes. Your total is exactly 18 of 30 points, which meets the pass mark.

Section 1 contributes 7 × 1 = 7 points. Section 2 contributes 5 + 3 + 3 + 0 = 11 points. The total is 18 of 30, exactly the published pass mark. Calculate with points rather than treating all 14 questions as equally weighted. The case illustrates the scoring rule and does not predict a live exam result.

What the bridge exam tests

The Bridge scope combines changes in the standard with the applied Enterprise Architecture topics listed below.

The Practitioner level focuses on application and analysis, in addition to knowledge and comprehension. Certified individuals are expected to apply the TOGAF approach to transform and manage change, apply the TOGAF method, and apply TOGAF techniques. The datasheet lists these competency areas:

The Bridge-specific learning requirements are in X2203. The general multi-level X2202 document covers EA Level 1, EA Level 2 and Business Architecture Level 1. Use the document for your actual route when checking the detailed learning outcomes.

Routes to TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner

Your existing qualification determines which shorter routes you are eligible to use. OGEA-10B is the Bridge; OGEA-103 is the full combined exam.

All routes in the table lead to Enterprise Architecture Practitioner. Holding TOGAF 9 Foundation alone does not satisfy the Bridge prerequisite. Candidates without the required prior qualification can use the full Enterprise Architecture examination route.

The specialist credentials, compared

These specialist credentials develop focused knowledge. Their subject matter, entry requirements and assessment arrangements differ.

Certification credentials cover smaller amounts of learning and lead to a certificate and Open Badge. The table compares their published topics and prerequisites.

Integrating Risk and Security has no prerequisite and requires at least three hours of study plus an approved assessment. The assessment can take several forms, including a test, workbook or exercises. It is separate from the Bridge exam.

The EA Leader self-study assessment has 30 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes, is closed book, and requires 70%. It runs in The Open Group's LMS through a Secure Exam Browser. These are EA Leader conditions, not the Bridge format.

Preparing, booking, and what happens after

Study however suits you — training or self-study are both allowed for the bridge — then book OGEA-10B through Pearson VUE, and consider the Learning Studies route if you also want the Applied Practitioner badge.

For the bridge, The Open Group states that candidates may choose how they study, including accredited training courses or self-study, so a course is optional for the exam itself. A Practitioner Study Guide and other self-study materials are published on the portfolio site.

The Applied Practitioner badge additionally requires satisfactory completion of the Practitioner Learning Studies through an Accredited Training Course Provider and Practitioner certification. Learning Studies are mandatory within accredited courses. They are not required for the exam-only certification route, and passing after independent self-study does not automatically earn that additional badge.

The Bridge datasheet states that Practitioner certification is indefinite for its version of the Body of Knowledge, with no renewal or recertification requirement. That does not automatically certify knowledge of a later version.

Confirm current exam fees and appointment availability with The Open Group and Pearson VUE before booking.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers to help you apply the guidance for TOGAF 9 Bridge and Specialist Credentials.

Does a specialist credential meet the Bridge prerequisite?
The Bridge requires TOGAF 9 Certified. A specialist credential on its own does not meet that stated prerequisite; check the separate route to Enterprise Architecture Practitioner that matches your existing qualification.
Does self-study prevent me from taking the Bridge?
No. The Bridge datasheet permits either self-study or training. The additional Applied Practitioner badge has its own Learning Studies condition, separate from passing the exam.
